Metanoia by Mary Anne Abdo

Copious amounts of guilt.

Anxiety has crept in,

like foul weather.

Drivers of all models hydroplaning,

on horrendous roads.

Holding the steering wheel,

as if human and leather skins melded as one.

Recollections of a six-year old child’s mind.

Car accident near Binghamton,

family station wagon,

crashing on the bridge,

hovering near the river.

Telling myself to plow through,

my frightened children’s horror.

No clear windshield view.

Too much fog…

Too much cold…

Too much fear…

Too many cars trying to fly away.

A frozen mind,

that is almost sixty,

and in fear of,

Alzheimer’s.

Wrong exit…

Wrong lane…

Wrong thinking…

As tears poured and a flood of four letters word escaped my lips.

Thoughts came back over and over again,

of that January 1972 day.

Screaming and just screaming,

back to exit 31 with more guilty tears.

Searching for penitence,

Slashing myself with words of condemnation.

Looking over the events of Sunday morning,

still seeking forgiveness.

Even through God had

pardoned me,

yesterday.
