The Uncertain Morning by James Piatt

The uncertain morning

sweeps through the sea’s loneliness

as briny metaphors bleed

into the dull drumming of

fish riding waves of sea-beams.

At the height of my lofty thoughts

I saw a gleam in my unreasonable acts.

For the sake of sanity,

I extinguished the gleam and

the lofty thoughts burned

in the gray ashes of shadowy metaphors.

Ebony ravens screeched in a field

where brittle flowers aired dry fragrances,

into the uncertain hours and their scents

fled into nothingness.

Seagulls flying in from a far-off sea,

laughed at me as anxiety covered

the uncertain morning.
