Katrina by Peter Mladinic

Did you know Krista Latham

who died in a Florida motel

around the time Katrina flooded

New Orleans and Houston?

Krista who is buried in Prairie

Haven, whose grave I can’t find,

even though her sister said

it’s there. Krista laughed

easily at her own bawdy jokes.

Her light brown hair, a shade

darker than her skin, matched

her eyes. I wrote a poem David

my friend with editor skills

said was bad Hallmark verse

and gave it to her sister.

Krista, I see her handsome face

less and less clearly.

Katrina took you away from me.
