BE A GOOD BOY by Lindsay McLeod

The monster in me

was shaped by criticism

undiluted and constant

formed by the pretence

of reward that never

did materialise despite

promises from mouths

that should've known

better before every slap

built wound upon wound

by cane and cord until I

learned to like or lump it.
