She was the first one to go because
no thread of hope was ever in the
air; she a meek girl at the age of
thirteen who had a poor opinion
about herself because of the fights
and negativity that poisoned the air.
And there was no way out for her,
no kind soul to whisk her away and
give her a loving home. She looked
like a broken angel and you could
see how she suffered deep inside
by looking into her dark, haunting
eyes. There was no means of escape
for her and the daily verbal abuse
was what drove her to steal away
an ounce of rat poison and die
swiftly in her sleep. I was the one
who'd tried to reach out to her
wishing there were a way to set
her free and a flame of sorrow
shook me inside. There was no
grave for her either so I planted
a handful of violets in her memory,
hoping God would give her a
loving sanctuary.
