A butterfly landed on the concrete by my feet
its wings orange and black
In my mind I organize butterflies
either “not a monarch” or “maybe a monarch”
This is not a monarch and she knows it
She dances circles on the sidewalk
opens and closes her wings shyly
as if weighed down by her own beauty

very beautiful the use of “monarch” and “not monarch” the way we all can do, usually to our detriment

This is such a delicate and breathtakingly beautiful poem, Tiffany! 🦋 The imagery of the butterfly opening and closing its wings ‘as if weighed down by her own beauty’ is incredibly poetic and deeply comforting. You have a wonderful way of capturing a simple moment in nature and giving it so much depth and soul. As an artist and writer myself, reading this was an absolute joy. Truly beautiful work!

This magnificent butterfly seems completely unconcerned with being correctly named. She simply is what she is, moving in her own small circle of beauty on a very ordinary sidewalk.
There’s something lovely about that contrast—the concrete beneath her, the delicate wings above it, and this quiet little reminder that beauty doesn’t always need a grand setting to be noticed.

The casual categorisation is the heart of this, dressed as an innocent and lovely butterfly.
Is that how we think?
